The Clean Air Coalition members know that about 4,000 trucks come through the neighborhood and over the Peace Bridge EVERY DAY. They spew diesel (a known carcinogen) into our homes, make it unsafe for our kids to play outside and for seniors to cross the street, and wear out our roads creating potholes and breaking curbs. Not only do they sit in the Peace Bridge Plaza awaiting inspections with their engines on, sometimes they actually pull into the neighborhood and sit with their engines on, for up to 35 minutes, as reported by some of our members. One member, who lives in one of the homes adjacent to the 190, has seen at least one truck a day idling on a dead end street by her house while she waits for her granddaughter’s bus. Other members routinely complain of trucks pulled over on the wider streets in the West Side, idling for long periods of time.
We’re on a mission to show people in power what our members already know. Please join us by texting TRUCKS to 877877 we will use the results to develop a map, and a community-report that our members will share with policy-makers to enforce the laws that are already on the books. You can also post a picture of an idling truck on Grow716.org.
